Sports & Physical Activity

Sport and physical activity is a valued and accepted part of our school's curriculum, contributing to the development of the whole child. It provides a vehicle for social, physical, emotional and moral learning and is an important expression of our culture.

The participation, enjoyment and skill development of our students is the corner-stone of the school sport/ physical activity program. All our students take part in this program.

There are also opportunities to represent our school at inter-school sports competitions. As a NSW public school we benefit from the opportunities for shared activities and competitions with other schools, coordinated by school sport associations. See the School Sport Unit website for details.

Grade Sport

Each Thursday, TJHS competes against schools in the Port Hacking Zone. Our school teams are known for their sportsmanship and competitive spirit. Staff actively coach and support their teams through each sporting season. As a result, our teams regularly participate in sport finals and win Zone Premierships.

Recreational Sport

For those students who do not participate in a grade competition, the school has a great selection of enjoyable recreational sports. These include surfing, ten pin bowling, cycling, aerobics, canoeing, golf, dancing, beach fitness, tennis, weights, yoga and fishing.

Year 7 All Year 7 students undertake a Lifesaving Program during Term 1 of the school year. This vital activity is based on awards by the Royal Life Saving Society and ensures that all students can safely partake in water sports and can help others in difficult situations. It takes place at Sutherland Leisure Centre on sports days and culminates in a full day to allow the awards to be completed. Once completed, the students participate in a coaching program where they learn the different skills for sports such as Rugby, Softball and Hockey.

As well as the grade competition, students are invited to participate in junior and senior state-wide knockout competitions. In recent years we have had success in Soccer, Rugby Union, Cricket, Softball, Baseball and Squash.
