The Jannali High School is committed to developing and supporting our Aboriginal students and their families. The school works in partnership with a range of stakeholders to deliver positive experiences and connect our students to Aboriginal culture in the community.
We have partnered with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) since 2015. This program has connected our students with the University of Wollongong and through AIME they complete individualised programs to support their academic studies, general wellbeing and transition to tertiary study.
We are an active member of the Sutherland Shire AECG and work with them to provide our students with interesting and culturally appropriate experiences. For example, every year we celebrate Gamarada Day at our school. We invite all of the Aboriginal students from our 10 feeder primary schools to come together and enjoy a day that focuses on culture and on country.
The school also has an excellent relationship with the DEC Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing Team. Every year our school delivers the Training Day component of the Speak Up! Program at NSW Parliament House.
Our Aboriginal students continue to make us proud. In recent years, our students have opened the Annual Aboriginal Education Conference (2015), hosted the Annual Deadly Kids Awards (2014, 2016) and hosted the Speak Up! Showcase at NSW Parliament House (2017). TJHS was also proud to have an Aboriginal student as school captain in 2016.
We welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family members, parents and community members to our school so that we can get to know each other, learn about the local Aboriginal community, collaborate on Personalised Learning Pathways and develop our shared goals for our students.
