Departing on Wednesday 24th September 2025, twenty Year 11 students from The Jannali High School set off to Bali for an unforgettable cultural immersion experience. Organised and led by Amy Tilling, the excursion was also accompanied by Principal Rick Coleman and Head Teacher Hannah Ingram. Designed as an extension of the Stage 5 International Studies course, the trip provided students with authentic opportunities to engage with Indonesian culture, history and daily life.
The group stayed in both Ubud and Sanur, taking part in a diverse and engaging itinerary. Activities included a traditional Indonesian cooking class, bargaining at local Arts and Crafts markets, visiting Ubud Palace, cycling through local Ubud villages and tasting a range of coffee samples at a plantation. Students made their own chocolates at a chocolate plantation, crafted silver rings in a traditional silver-making class and learned intricate techniques in a batik workshop. Further highlights were a boat trip to Nusa Lembongan, a visit to a local middle school, exploring the iconic Tanah Lot temple and concluding the adventure with a day of fun at the Waterbom park.
Arriving home on Friday 3rd October 2025, students returned with deeper cultural understanding and memories they will cherish for years to come.
Student testimonials:
The Bali excursion was not only an incredible experience to be able to bond with my peers but it was also an amazing opportunity that allowed me to fully immerse myself within the Balinese culture. My top three events of the trip were the bike-riding journey, silver-making workshop and all of the in between moments. The bike ride was so fun as we got to ride through the Balinese villages and see their gorgeous houses which are so rich in history and are made with such decadence and detail. This was such a great way to explore Bali villages in a really relaxing way. The silver-making workshop was another highlight, obviously because it meant I got to take home some new sparkly jewellery which is always a plus, but also because the guide taught us the way in which silver-jewellery was made in traditional Balinese practice which was extremely interesting. Of course while this wasn't something that could be seen on the comprehensive itinerary, the random moments in between our activities were the best, whether it was watching a band sing Billie Eilish while we were out at dinner or whether it was Mr Coleman singing to Adele with us in the bus ride, these moments made the trip so very special!!! Between the incredible activities, delicious food, warm weather, and the shopping adventures, it was just the perfect trip. Huge thanks to Miss Tilling and the teachers for making it all happen - it’s definitely something I’ll never forget. Terima Kasih!

My highlights of the school trip to Bali included the day trip to Nusa Lembongan where we spent the day at an amazing cafe and the bike tour around the rice fields. I learnt that Balinese culture is noticeably different to Australian culture in the way that the people live and behave in the community. One memory from the trip that I will remember forever was me and my friends mucking around in the pool at Waterbom park. This experience has deeply broadened my knowledge and consideration for the Balinese culture and have allowed me to create so many amazing memories.

Bali has truly been a highlight of my life, getting to travel overseas with my best friends, building new relationships, seeing all the amazing sites and seeing a brand new side to my teachers, especially Mr Coleman. I went into the trip with the highest hopes and excitement and I didn’t think it was possible but it surpassed my expectations. One of the high points of the trip was definitely doing karaoke with Mr Coleman to Adele as well as our day trip out to Nusa Lembongan (where shockingly I didn’t get burnt). I will forever cherish the experiences I had with some of my favourite people by immersing ourselves in Balinese culture when eating and making the food, participating in an art class as well as learning and practicing the language. I will never forget anything about this trip from the lines at the waterbom park and all the sweat dripping down my back when walking through the markets to the late night deep and meaningfuls with the girls on our hotel room floor. Thank you Miss Tilling!

Our trip to Bali was an exciting and unforgettable cultural experience. I enjoyed the trip throughout, however, the highlight of the trip was definitely the cooking class and Nusa Lembongan. The cooking class was a hands-on experience which taught me about traditional Balinese style cooking through the preparation of various types of dishes, and was overall a great experience. Nusa Lembongan was also a great part of the trip. I enjoyed the relaxing day in the sun as well as the chance to go for a swim. Overall the trip was a great experience, and was very well planned. 10/10 would recommend.

At The Jannali High School, student leadership is about turning vision into action. Students are encouraged to actively pursue their ideas and initiatives, whether it’s proposing new extracurricular activities, advocating for sustainability, or fostering inclusivity. With a clear sense of purpose and direction, our leaders are empowered to shape the future of our school while building the confidence, creativity, and integrity needed to thrive beyond the classroom.
Support and service are at the heart of leadership at our school. Students engage in a wide range of projects within the school and the broader community, from fundraising events to wellbeing initiatives. These opportunities cultivate responsibility and empathy, while encouraging students to contribute meaningfully to society. By developing skills in collaboration, mentorship, and communication, our leaders strengthen relationships with peers, teachers, and the wider community, fostering an inclusive and supportive school culture.
At The Jannali High School, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to Connect, Thrive and Achieve. Our leadership programs provide pathways for students to influence positive change while making lasting connections with the school community. At the core of leadership is influence, and we encourage all students to use their unique voice and passion to work together, supporting not only their own growth, but also the collective success of others.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a globally recognised youth development program that empowers young people to challenge themselves, discover their strengths, and build confidence beyond the classroom.
Participants work towards achieving a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award by completing four key sections: Physical Recreation, Skills, Volunteering, and an Adventurous Journey. Through these components, students give back to their community, develop new or existing talents, improve their fitness, and undertake a team expedition (camp) where students grow as self-reliant individuals and as supportive team members.
The Duke of Ed fosters resilience, leadership, independence and perseverance. It encourages students to step outside their comfort zone, commit to long-term goals, and develop real-world skills that support future study, employment and personal growth.
