Year 12 Updated Trial Exam information

Dear Parents/Carers and Year 12

As previously stated on Friday, 6 August, the Department of Education (DoE) in consultation with the NSW Premier and NSW Health, released new HSC Advice. The key points were:

  • Year 12 students and those sitting the HSC exams will not be able to return to full time learning on the school site.
  • School assessment or Trial Exams are to be completed at home for all schools operating under Level 4 restrictions.

The school has used this latest advice to undergo a rigorous process to support Year 12.  I want to thank our Executive Staff and Year 12 Captains and Vice-Captains for their continued efforts and input towards making these revised plans for Year 12. At the forefront of their decision making and planning was the Wellbeing of Year 12 as they progress towards their HSC. Below are the details outlining our revised plans:

  • Assessment Task No. 4 (formally known as the Trials) will commence Week 7 (Monday, 23 August). This has been pushed back one (1) week from our revised date.
  • Students will complete all revised Assessments at ‘home’.
  • Students will only be assessed on content up to and including Term 3, Week 4.
  • Students will complete Assessment No. 4 using their existing Year 12 Trial Exam timetable, however, the start date will be Monday, 23 August. Some adjustments have occurred with the length of time for tasks. Additionally, Modern History is now a hand-in task.
  • Revised Assessment notifications will be issued to Year 12 during Term 3, Week 5 reflecting these changes.
  • All assessments will be ‘open book’.
  • All task weightings will remain the same.
  • Where required, Term 3, Week 5 will return to teaching course work and Term 3, Week 6 will focus on revision.
  • On the day of each task, students will receive each task through their Google Classroom just prior to the start time. Students will complete each task by ‘writing’ in their exam booklet. Students will then upload their responses back through their Google Classroom (students must keep their hard copy responses).
  • Students will have 15 minutes at the conclusion of each assessment to upload their responses.
  • The school will set up a Year 12 Assessment Hotline for students to call if they have difficulties during their assessment. Students can call the school on Ph: 9521 2805 and office staff will make contact with the relevant staff or Head Teacher who will address the issue.
  •  Students requiring special provisions will be contacted during Week 5 to discuss how support will be provided for these assessments.
  • The school will send out to all students an examination pack. This pack will include:
  1. Exam writing booklets for students to complete all tasks.
  2. Protocols for students that will provide instructions on how to access their exams, and upon completion, upload their responses. It will also include the rules and expectations required when competing their assessments.
  3. Reference sheets (relevant for certain subjects).
  4. Data sheets (relevant for certain subjects).
  • At the conclusion of all their assessments, students will be required to return all their written responses to the school in one bundle in the envelope provided (this will be in the student’s examination pack). Students will complete this task by dropping the pack into the Drop Box located at the front office inside the school gate.

Oral and Performance Exams, Major Projects and Submitted Works - Special Consideration Program

It was recently announced that schools can apply for special consideration if the student lives or goes to school in an area that has been placed in Level 4 lockdown.

The Jannali High School will be utilising this program in support of our students who are studying one or more of these courses. Each Head Teacher will be working with their staff to finalise these applications to NESA on behalf of the students.

Further Contact

I have requested through Mr Warwick, (Year 12 Year Adviser), the opportunity to speak with Year 12 at the next MS Teams Year 12 Meeting. This will occur this Thursday, 12 August at 11:00am and I encourage all Year 12 to join so that they have the opportunity to listen to the school’s latest advice and ask any questions.

Kind Regards

Dave Stewart, Relieving Principal
