Update 20 August 2021

An Afternoon with Ellie, Meet a Matilda

Dear Parents and Carers

The staff at TJHS would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort the students have made over the last six weeks of lockdown to remain engaged in learning, as well as the support families have provided to help their children navigate the challenges of learning from home and the restrictions of lockdown.

The announcement from the Premier today, that lockdown will be extended until the end of September, will mean that more than likely students will not return on site for the remainder of this term. We are looking forward to the time when students can return to school and want to reassure families that we will continue to focus on providing as normal a learning experience as possible despite the obstacles we face.

Teaching and Learning

Students are currently completing classwork that has been communicated through the “Continuation of Learning” programs and respective Google Classrooms. The next two-week cycle Weeks 8 and 9 (31.8.21 to 10.9.21) will be available through the usual channels at the end of next week (Friday 27.8.21).

Assessment and Reporting

Next week Year 12 sit Assessment Task #4 across all their subjects. We wish them all the best as they complete these final components of their HSC course. Assessment Task packs were posted home over a week ago, ensuring all students have the resources they need to complete these tasks. If a student has any concerns or in the unlikely event there is an issue with technology please make sure that you contact the class teacher of your assessment task through Google Classroom or ring the TJHS hotline on 9521 2805.

Year 11 Assessment tasks for the Preliminary Course will be completed at home. Year 11 students had a Year Adviser meeting earlier this week and were given information about the structure and scheduling of these tasks in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 3. This will be a very similar format to the process Year 12 are undertaking next week. A timetable for these tasks will be finalised within the next week and communicated to students as soon as possible.

Assessment tasks across many subjects in Years 7-10 are regularly scheduled in the last few weeks of Term 3. We are mindful of the additional workload students have in completing class tasks and assessments at this time. To enable students to complete tasks to the best of their ability, scheduled class time in the Continuation of Learning will be allocated to completing assessment tasks. Students are encouraged to ask their teachers for feedback and clarification of tasks through Google Classroom.

Wellbeing Initiatives

Thrive Thursday continues to be a successful wellbeing initiative whereby students are able to take some time for themselves to focus on their Wellbeing. Yesterday’s theme was to reconnect socially with family and friends and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and challenges on the Social Wellbeing Pillar. Students also had the option catching up on work they may have not completed.

Wear it Purple Day will take place next Friday, 27.8 21. Students are encouraged to Make It / Bake It / Wear It Purple next Friday. Take a picture and upload it to your Year Adviser’s Google Classroom.

R U OK? Day will take place in Week 9, on Thursday 9.9.21.  More detail will be posted closer to the date, however students are able to start planning for this day by thinking all things yellow.

Some very exciting news … save the date Tuesday, 24th August at 2:45pm. Meet a Matilda – An afternoon with Ellie Carpenter.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

All students have had the opportunity to meet on their Year Adviser’s Microsoft Teams Year Group Team this week, having the chance to keep in touch and receive information about the SRC election process. Year 11 nominations have been completed and the voting process has begun. Successful applicants will be notified early next week. Students in Years 7-10 have access to nomination forms through Year Adviser’s Google Classroom and have been notified of submission dates. We encourage all students who are interested in a leadership position to consider applying.

Looking forward to the time that we return in person, I hope everyone remains in good health and keeps safe.

Your sincerely,

 NICOLE WASER, Relieving Principal
