Our public school students are top class

Public school students have again dominated the HSC honours securing 71 of the 126 First in Course awards announced today.

Among the high achievers, Sariena Ye from James Ruse Agricultural High School became only the fourth person since 1991 to secure first place in both Chemistry and Physics – and the first female in 27 years to top both subjects.

NSW Education Secretary Mark Scott congratulated the winners and also paid tribute to every student that had completed their HSC in 2020.

“Those students who received a First in Course – and their families - should be rightly proud of their achievements,” Mr Scott said.

“Considering the particular challenges of 2020, we are extremely proud of every student that has shown the determination and resilience to achieve their best and finish their HSC.

“They now leave school with the skills to embark upon a successful life, no matter what they choose next.”

Public school students secured First in Course across a range of subject areas including, among others, three of the five mathematics and English courses, chemistry and physics, science extension, Aboriginal studies, economics, ancient history, languages and visual arts.

Mr Scott said the diversity of subjects topped by public school students showed NSW Education was committed to quality education across all fields of endeavour.

“Our success in the HSC is also a tribute to the quality of teaching and dedication of staff in supporting our students during their final year of schooling.”

The First in Course winners this year came from a wider selection of schools with James Ruse Agricultural High School the most successful school overall, securing six First in Course positions.

Updates to COVID-19 restrictions affecting NSW schools

Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW

NSW Health has a website to inform you of the actions you should take if you have been in a location where there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 within NSW. Monitor the site and follow the relevant health advice if you have been at any of the locations at the specified dates and times.

Students and staff who have travelled through or visited Victoria

All students and staff who have visited Victoria must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Except for students and staff who reside in a border town, all students and staff who have visited Victoria in the 14 days before the commencement of school should not attend school until they complete the 14 days self-isolation period since they left Victoria.

Students and staff who are unable to return to school due to these self-isolation requirements will be supported to learn and work remotely during the self-isolation period via the online learning hubs until they return to on-campus learning and teaching.

NSW Health has requested anyone who has been in Victoria and is unwell or has flu-like symptoms arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Refer to current advice for people who have recently visited Victoria.

Information for students and staff on new NSW-Victoria border restrictions

The NSW Government has announced further tightening to the restrictions for people travelling across the NSW-Victorian border.

From midnight Tuesday 21 July a border zone, defined along the Murray River, will be established.

Anyone travelling from Victoria to NSW must apply for a new permit through Service NSW.

Victorian residents who have been in one of the restricted areas in Victoria in the last 14 days must not enter NSW.

Attending schools along the border

Current permits will expire at midnight, Tuesday 21 July. We strongly encourage all parents and staff to check they have a permit and if not, apply for one through Service NSW.

Students and staff who reside in Victoria will need to be eligible for a border permit to attend school in person.

Under the new public health order, the border zone has been reduced significantly.

Not all students and staff may be eligible for a border permit under the public health order. If you are not eligible for a border permit you will not be able to cross the border. Students and staff will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Further information on the new border zone is available from Service NSW.

Border permits can be rescinded at any time if a cluster outbreak in your community occurs. We encourage parents to monitor local circumstances regularly as things may change in the coming days or weeks.

Transport to and from school will run as scheduled. For travel advice to and from school refer to Transport for NSW.

New restrictions affecting boarding schools

Any student returning from Victoria to reside at a boarding school in NSW must now self-isolate for 14 days in a NSW location separate to the boarding school. They must also obtain a negative test swab from day 10 of their isolation before entering school and have written confirmation of the test result and the period spent isolating.

Those who are unable to return to boarding while they are completing the self-isolation period will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

More information

Our school will be open to welcome students back to onsite learning from the beginning of Term 3 – Tuesday 21 July 2020.

As you would be aware the border between NSW and Victoria closed as of 12:01am 8 July 2020.

All staff and students returning from Victoria after this time must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days.

All students who have been in Victoria in the last 14 days before the commencement of school must not attend school until they complete the 14 days self-isolation period since they left Victoria.

NSW Health has requested anyone who has been in Victoria and is unwell or has flu-like symptoms arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Students who are unable to return to school due to the border closures or self-isolation will be supported to learn remotely.

We would like to remind our community the most important action you can take is to practise good hand hygiene and physical distancing. Our school will be vigilant in implementing these requirements to minimise the risk at school.

Curriculum reform focuses on deep learning

Changes to the NSW school curriculum will be the biggest education shake-up in 30 years.

The reforms, announced by the NSW Government on Tuesday, will start rolling out in 2021. All Kindergarten to Year 12 students will learn the new curriculum by 2024.

The changes are in response to the NSW Curriculum Review by Professor Geoff Masters and will ensure every student is prepared and ready for their future.

The reforms are based on:

decluttering the curriculum by reducing unnecessary subjects

a ‘back to basics approach’ that will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science

Year 11 and Year 12 prequalification for university and TAFE courses.

Education Week to celebrate learning together

Education Week 2020 will be held from Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August.

Education Week is our annual week of celebration to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities.

This year’s theme is ‘Learning together’ and it reflects the incredible months of 2020 where NSW public school students have continued to learn and achieve, despite natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our schools have experienced significant disruption but our staff – in partnership with parents and carers – have worked tirelessly to ensure that high quality teaching and learning has continued for all students.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the best learning takes place when there is a partnership of students, teachers, parents, carers and the community.

“Our schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared,” Mr Scott said.

“As our lives slowly return to normal, it’s time for us to reflect on the achievements and resilience of our entire school community. We look forward to celebrating Education Week with all of you in August.”

Statewide events for Education Week include:

a live stream launch on Monday, 3 August

activities for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day on Tuesday, 4 August

a live streamed student film festival on Wednesday, 5 August.

Schools are invited to share photos, videos and stories of local celebrations on social media using the hashtag #EdWeek20 or send an email to educationweek@det.nsw.edu.au.

Return to full time face-to-face learning

I feel there was a collective sigh of relief from parents and school staff when the Premier announced schools would return to full face-to-face learning from Monday 25 May. Here at school, our collective sigh was a little longer as we waited until we had official confirmation and advice from our employer, the Department of Education.

So, it is true that The Jannali High School will be open for full time face-to-face learning from next Monday, 25 May. We will be returning to our normal structure of the school day with all students following their timetabled WEEK B lessons with their class teacher. This includes Period Zero classes and off-line classes for senior students. All students are expected to return to school wearing their correct and full school uniform.

Despite this return to school there are still a number of guidelines and restrictions that continue to be in place to ensure the health and safety of all school staff and students.

All school activities and operations will be in line with Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health guidelines as applicable. School students do not need to follow physical distancing guidelines, but should follow good hygiene practices like:

Regularly washing hands

Avoiding sharing drinks or food

Coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue which should be discarded immediately.

School attendance

All students should be at school unless:

They have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition. We ask that parents contact with the school and provide a copy of relevant medical documentation. Arrangements will be made through our Student Wellbeing Team to liaise with faculties and ensure the student’s learning is supported while they are at home. Please note, students who live with a family member in one of the categories identified as being at increased risk by the AHPPC, should attend school unless a medical practitioner advises otherwise in writing.

They are currently unwell. If your child is unwell, do not send them to school. If they are unwell at school you or your nominated emergency contact will need to collect them immediately. Please make sure your contact details are up to date. If a student is absent without a medical reason for more than three days, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and followed up by the school. If you need any support to get your child back to school, please contact the school.

Reporting and assessment

Your child has been assessed throughout Term 1 and during the learning from home period. They will receive additional formative assessments on their return to school.

Our school is adhering to the Semester 1 Report calendar and timeline, so that parents and students are provided with meaningful progress on their learning to date. The Years 11 and 12 Semester 1 Report format is unchanged from previous years, however, the Years 7-10 Semester 1 Report has been modified. These reports will not have marks or grades appearing on them but instead will have a rating scale of Achieved Outcome, Working Towards Outcome and Not Achieved Outcome for each of the listed course outcomes in each subject. This rating will consist of formal assessments from Term 1, the quality of work submitted through Google Classrooms and teacher observations. The Learning Profiles section will remain and have an additional profile reflecting student engagement with learning from home. As always, there will be a formative teacher comment on the report.

School activities

Teachers will continue to follow the same school curriculum with the exception of some activities that can’t go ahead for now.

What students can do @ TJHS:

Use the school library

Engage in non-contact sporting activities. The PDHPE Program may need to be modified to ensure students can meet course requirements while adhering to this advice. Our Sports Organisers are exploring a modified Sports Day that maximises student engagement in physical activity which supports large numbers of students where we have limited space.

VET work placement for Year 12 students is able to proceed from 1 June 2020. Year 10 and 11 work-placement is able to proceed from Term 3 2020.

School based apprenticeships and traineeships can recommence once the relevant workplaces are back in operation

What students can’t do @ TJHS:

Attend school assemblies (unless needed to pass on critical information).

Attend school incursions and excursions, including camps.

Attend work experience.

Participate in inter-school activities (debating, inter-school sport).

Be part of school activities requiring parents or other volunteers.

Drink from a water bubbler. Students need to bring their own water bottle instead.

Attend TAFE for study. They may continue to learn online.

Our Dance and Drama Ensembles will not re-commence until further notice, however, our School Band will re-commence rehearsals. Days and times for Band rehearsals will be communicated to families.

School cleaning and hygiene supplies

Our school is currently receiving additional cleaning in line with the AHPPC guidelines and advice from NSW Health. Targeted areas include high-touch areas and other hard surfaces, door handles, lockers, light switches and handrails in stairways and movement areas. There will also be additional cleaning of toilets and bubblers and topping up of supplies like soap throughout each day. Students are asked to observe strict personal hygiene behaviours at all times and may be asked to wipe their desks with sanitiser wipes provided to them. There are many signs around the school reminding students of these hygiene protocols.

School grounds

Schools have been advised that there should be no visitors to school sites unless they are essential. Parents are asked to phone the school on 9521 2805 or email to Jannali-h.schools@det.nsw.edu.au if they have any questions or concerns regarding their child’s learning. Parents will be contacted by the relevant Deputy Principal if a meeting is required.

Our scheduled Parent Teacher Interviews and Subject Selection Information Evenings will not be going ahead in their usual formats. Parents can contact their child’s classroom teacher regarding the Semester 1 Report by phoning the school. We are exploring alternatives to these parent evenings and will communicate these to families as soon as possible.

The school canteen will re-open from Monday 25 May and our uniform shop will continue to take orders by phone or email and parents can pick orders up from our administration office.

2020 HSC

It is important that Year 12 students and their parents stay up to date with latest information and advice from NESA - NESA News. The 2020 HSC Exam Timetable has been published. We have confirmation that written exams will now commence on Tuesday, 20 October 2020.

Thank you once again to all of our parents for your patience, understanding and support over the past two months of working and learning from home. We are all extremely excited to see our students back at school full-time.

NSW students return to the classroom full-time

Students across NSW will be back in the classroom full-time from next Monday, 25 May.

The success of the phased return to face to face teaching has demonstrated the education system and community are ready for school to come back full-time.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell thanked school communities and parents for their patience during this difficult time.

Ms Berejiklian said a return to full-time face to face teaching and learning is crucial for the education progress of every child in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

“Since starting a managed return to the classroom, we have seen a strong degree of confidence from our school communities in managing COVID-19 and a clear desire for all students to be back at school,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We expect schools to stick with the health advice – increased cleaning, access to hygiene supplies and compliance with hygiene practices – and look forward to seeing all students back on campus five days a week.

“The health advice is very clear; a return to full-time face to face teaching is safe.”

Over the last two weeks schools have been working hard to support students practise good hygiene and implement new routines at school, which has been successful giving the community confidence that full-time face to face teaching can resume.

Ms Mitchell said she was eager to see students back in the classroom full-time.

“Our principals, teachers, support staff, parents and carers have gone above and beyond to continue the education of our students while we respond to this pandemic,” Ms Mitchell said.

“My priority is the education of our children. We know that parents across NSW share our desire for students to be back in school, and that is our expectation.

“Schools will need to maintain the measures and precautions they have put in place for the foreseeable future, including no assemblies and excursions.

“Teachers will be focused on identifying where their students are at in their education and we will be supporting them to recognise and assist those students who need additional help.”

Read the department's latest advice for families.

Continuation of Learning - Update 15/05/2020

It would be fair to say that Week 1 of Phase 1 returning to school at The Jannali High School was extremely successful. Our students showed how enthusiastic they were to return to school by their overall attendance for the week being approximately 95%.

Our students worked hard on their allocated day despite the obvious challenges of being in large groups in different learning spaces around the school and trying to maintain physical distancing throughout the day.

Year 12 students responded well to their alternate structure that enabled them to be with their class teacher twice over the week. From next week, Year 12 are expected to attend on Friday as well as their allocated Monday and Wednesday. Updated Year 12 timetables will be posted on their Adviser’s Google Classroom.

This is our first step towards returning to normal school operations and face to face learning therefore we expect all students to attend on their allocated day next week.

Attendance at School

All students are expected to attend on their scheduled days. Parents are requested to notify the school by email in situations where their children cannot return to school due to COVID-19.

Year 12 students with study periods during Period 1 can arrive late and those with a study period during Period 6 can leave early but they must sign in and out at the Front Office. All other students too, are expected to be at school by 8:40am on their scheduled day.

· Monday – Year 11 and Year 12 are at school

· Tuesday – Year 8 are at school

· Wednesday – Year 10 and Year 12 are at school

· Thursday – Year 9 are at school

· Friday – Year 7 and Year 12 are at school

Uniform

Students in Years 7-10 are able to wear their school sport uniform on their scheduled day. It must be the full sport uniform otherwise students are required to wear their full school uniform.

Students in Years 11 and 12 are to wear their full school uniform on their scheduled days.

Despite the nice Autumn weather our rooms are becoming colder so it’s important that students have the correct school jumper/jacket as well.

Canteen

Our school canteen has decided that they are unable to be open from this coming week until such time as the school returns to full operation.

Continuation of Learning @ THJS Programs

Students will continue with their Google Classroom units of work both at home and at school during Phase 1 as outlined in the Continuation of Learning @ TJHS Programs for Weeks 1-5 of this term. These programs will be reviewed and updated as we progress through the different phases of returning students to school.

Students will need to ensure they bring their device each day, fully charged, along with other equipment such as workbooks and pens.

Semester 1 Reports

Year 11 and Year 12 Reports will be completed as per our usual timeframes and process, informed by their published assessment schedules.

The assessment schedules for Years 7-10 have been revised in light of COVID-19 and our learning from home arrangements. Semester 1 reports for these year groups will be informed by any formal assessments already conducted during Term 1, the degree and quality of work completed while learning from home based on teacher professional judgment.

Students’ overall performance will be judged against all relevant course outcomes addressed throughout Semester 1. The usual A-E Grades have been replaced with a rating scale of Achieved Outcome (AO) – Working Towards Outcome (WTO) – Not Achieved Outcome (NAO). Teacher comments explicitly address what students have achieved, what skills they have demonstrated and what they can do to improve over the remainder of the year.

Our Learning Profiles have an additional criteria linked to their level of engagement with learning from home.

2020 HSC

It is important that Year 12 students and their parents stay up to date with latest information and advice from NESA - NESA News. The 2020 HSC Exam Timetable has been published. Along with the already published changes to practical and performance exam dates, the written exams have been put back to commence on Tuesday 20 October 2020.

Thank you once again to all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding of our school as we work towards returning to usual operations over the weeks ahead.

Help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community by downloading the app.

Social distancing and washing your hands remain the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The COVIDSafe app, developed by the Australian Government, helps to reduce the spread by allowing health experts to find close contacts faster and more accurately.

The app does not track your location. It uses your phone's Bluetooth to record other users you come into contact with, so if they test positive, NSW Health can let you know.

From Monday 11 May (Week 3) students will begin a phased return to school.

The phased return will maintain distancing in the classroom while supporting students' education and wellbeing.

Most students will continue learning from home and will only attend school 1 day each week.

Our school will continue to provide detailed information about the return to the classroom throughout the rest of Term 2.

Measures to keep schools clean and safe for all students and staff include:

25% more cleaning time focused on high-touch areas

priority deliveries of hygiene supplies including soap and hand sanitiser

Continuation of Learning - Update 8/05/2020

With the commencement of Phase 1 returning students to school from Monday 11 May, please refer to the following information to help prepare your children. Year Advisers will upload timetables, group lists and other relevant information to each year group’s Google Classroom in preparation for next week as well.

All staff at The Jannali High School are excited about the prospect of seeing our students at school again from May 11 and I hope our students are equally excited.

Attendance at School

All students are expected to attend on their scheduled days. Parents are requested to notify the school by email in situations where their children cannot return to school from Monday, 11 May due to COVID-19.

All Year 12 students are required to be at school by 8:40am on Monday, 11 May regardless of whether or not they have a timetabled class during Period 1. All other students too, are expected to be at school by 8:40am on their scheduled day.

· Mondays – Year 11 and Year 12 are at school

· Tuesdays – Year 8 are at school

· Wednesday – Year 10 and Year 12 are at school

· Thursdays – Year 9 are at school

· Fridays – Year 7 are at school

CARE Values and Expectations

Our usual expectations regarding students’ application to learning, positive behaviour, respectful relationships with peers and teachers, attendance and punctuality, uniform and looking after the physical environment will be upheld with students returning to school.

We also need to be considerate of the wellbeing, health and safety of everyone in our school as school resumes over the coming weeks. We have therefore created a modified set of CARE Values and Expectations to support Phase 1 returning students to school.

In particular, we ask that all students observe our personal hygiene and social distancing protocols in learning spaces, toilets and playground areas. There are signs in key areas of the

school to remind students of these expectations. Seating areas have been marked to support social distancing in the playground and students won’t be sitting next to one another in learning spaces.

Enhanced Cleaning

Our school has received additional cleaning hours each day as part of the Department of Education’s Enhanced Cleaning Strategy. An intensive cleaning roster has been created so that all learning spaces, toilets, playground areas etc. can be cleaned regularly throughout each day to ensure the health and safety of all staff and students.

Canteen

Our school canteen will re-open as of Tuesday 12 May and of course all canteen staff will be following strict hygiene protocols for the preparation and serving of food and drinks.

Students will need to ensure they bring their device each day along with other equipment such as workbooks and pens.

To support this continuation of learning at our school we have developed some protocols and procedures for teachers of Year 11 and Year 12 who wish to conduct live video conferences with their classes. Click here to view the Student/Parent Protocols.

Mr Mark Brown, our Band Master has created opportunities for live video conferences for our school’s Concert Band to support the ongoing development for those students.

2020 HSC

It is important that Year 12 students and their parents stay up to date with latest information and advice from NESA - NESA News

Thank you once again to all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding of our school as we work towards returning to usual operations over the weeks ahead.

Religion and ethics lessons continue at home

Students learning from home can continue to access Special religious education (SRE) and Special education in ethics (SEE) classes.

Face-to-face SRE, SEE and Voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools (VSA) will not be available until schools resume normal operations.

In response to requests from school communities, SRE and SEE approved providers are delivering their authorised curriculum with modifications to allow students to learn from home from the start of Term 2.

The lesson content and the mode of delivery has been reviewed and modified for easy access by students. The approved providers recognise that learning at home will not replicate face-to-face learning at school.

The learning from home SRE and SEE programs are now available:

all faiths (Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Bahai and Hindu) SRE

Anglican SRE

Continuation of Learning - Update 4/5/2020

We might not be in the home straight but the completion of this event seems to be in our sights. The message to schools and their communities was always that managing COVID-19 was going to be like running a marathon, not a sprint. With all that has been happening over the past week or so, it is apparent that we have changed tact and we are now running a middle distance race. Stamina is still required but the pace has stepped up and we need to ensure we are continuing to support the educational wellbeing for all of our students. This is important as we prepare to transition students back to school from May 11. Critical to this plan is that we ensure our staff will be able to endure the hectic pace so that their own wellbeing is maintained well after COVID-19.

I believe The Jannali High School has been well-prepared to provide a continuation of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic through our BYODiPad program and associated digital learning platform using Google Classrooms. We have also been well-placed because of the quality of our teaching staff which has been a strong focus on our current school plan. Our school administrative and support are extremely dedicated to ensuring the learning needs of all students are supported regardless of their ability. Our school’s leadership team including; Ms Waser, Mr Stewart, Ms Flower, Ms MacKay, Ms MacPherson, Mr Cavallaro, Ms Peard, Ms Smith, Mr Edgar, Ms Mulheron, Ms Graham, Mr Carpenter, Ms Van Luyt and Ms Shah has been outstanding in leading teams across all areas of the school throughout this situation.

We’re all very proud of our students for the way they have engaged with their learning from home and recognise there are still many challenges with managing this work across all of their subjects. We are extremely thankful to our parent community for their patience and understanding of the challenges faced by our school while also directly supporting their children’s learning from home. Reports suggest that parents will have a new-found respect for teachers as a result of COVID-19 and while this might be true, I would suggest our staff continue to respect the fact that we have a very supportive parent community.

Please refer to the documents that support the following information which will all be made available to parents and students through our various communication channels.

Week 2 – Phase 0

Students continue with learning from home through Google Classrooms. The Jannali High School remains open for students who need to attend, with supervision provided.

Week 3 – Phase 1

From Monday 11 May students will return to The Jannali High School one day per week for Years 7-11 while Year 12 will return two days per week. Phase 1 was promoted to continue for the majority of the term before moving into Phase 2 which will see students attending more days. This, in fact, could occur sooner.

Mondays – Year 11 and Year 12 are at school

Tuesdays – Year 8 are at school

Wednesday – Year 10 and Year 12 are at school

Thursdays – Year 9 are at school

Fridays – Year 7 are at school

Years 7-11 will be organised into 4 groups and will rotate around the Hall, Gym and Library (2 groups) over the course of the day. Students will follow the timetable below as a guide so that they can keep on track with the learning activities for each of their subjects. Teachers will supervise this learning and where possible subject-specific staff will be rostered on to provide assistance to students.

At this stage, social distancing requirements are to be adhered to for adults and therefore arrangements have been made to reduce the number of staff onsite during Phase 1. We also still have a number of teachers working from home because they are vulnerable.

Year 12 will work on a separate timetable to the other year groups on their days so that can be supervised by their subject teacher. We’re lucky that the majority of our Year 12 classes are small enough to allow this to work within the social distancing requirements. Larger classes can be split amongst similar course level classes.

For Phase 1 to work effectively we need all students to attend school each week on their rostered day while also knowing that there will be other students who need to attend school as they are doing currently. Schools have been provided additional casual staff to support this need.

Year 12 students are encouraged to speak with their teachers and, where possible, make arrangements to use school facilities for the completion of their work especially for those students who are working on their externally marked major projects.

Schools have been provided with additional hours under the Advanced Cleaning strategy. This has therefore been taken into account when planning for how and when our students will be transitioned back to school to ensure learning spaces, staffrooms, toilets and the playground are able to be cleaned effectively and efficiently in order to maintain the health and safety for our staff and students.

Continuation of Learning @ THJS Programs

All faculties have completed their learning programs for Weeks 1-5. Follow the links below to access these programs. These programs are designed to help parents work with their children on understanding the various units of work and weekly topics that will be studied. Google Classrooms will have the relevant information and learning activities posted for students.

We are well aware of the stress and anxiety felt by students in the initial stages of the learning from home programs and the message to faculties was to concentrate on the essential learning outcomes in various subjects. This too is a challenge for any classroom teacher as they will always endeavour to ensure students have all relevant information to be successful in their courses. This particularly difficult for teachers of Stage 6 course which are inherently content heavy.

Semester 1 Assessment and Reporting

Years 11 and 12 will continue with their published assessment schedules. Given that there were no half yearly exams scheduled as per the Stronger HSC Standards, for the most part these schedules remain unaffected. Therefore, the Semester 1 Reports process and timelines remain the same.

As has been previously communicated, there are no formal assessments to be issued to Years 7-10 in Term 2 as per the attached revised assessment schedules. Formal assessments conducted in Term 1 will be used to inform students’ Semester 1 Reports. Teachers will also make professional judgements on how well students have achieved course outcomes throughout the Continuation of Learning @ TJHS programs based on the quality of work submitted through Google Classrooms.

The Year 10 Assessment Schedule reflects assessments that would be conducted over the course of 2020, similar to the Year 11 and Year 12 Assessment Schedules. Because of the changes, parents and students will see that Term 1 assessments completed will have a percentage weighting, while for the Continuation of Learning @ TJHS does not. The remaining assessments schedule for Semester 2 will have their weightings re-organised once school returns to normal operations hence why they are list as TBC.

Phase 1 will provide students with the opportunity to catch up on any work that hasn’t been completed to date in order to receive a Semester 1 Report that is reflective of their ability and application in their respective subjects. Teachers will already have made contact with students who are not engaging with their work as expected along with providing feedback on work completed. Parents may also have been contacted where there have been serious concerns about a lack of engagements. Similarly, a letter of concern may also be sent to parents in these instances. We are still bound by the course requirements of NESA, particularly for Years 10-12 so in some cases their could be a formal warning letter sent to students for failing to complete course work with due diligence

Advice from the Department and NESA allows for schools to be flexible on what they assess and report on regarding student achievement for Years 7-10 in Semester 1. At this stage, there isn’t any definitive advice for schools on how the reports should look in terms of grades.

2020 HSC

The latest news from NESA is that the 2020 HSC exams are going ahead and they plan to release the timetable for HSC written exams on Friday, 15 May. HSC results will then be made available mid-December. NESA, the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) and universities are still working on a plan to ensure a university pathway for our 2020 Year 12 students.

Despite the message that our senior students will be following their published assessment schedules, NESA has given schools the authority to adjust those schedules, the design of tasks and their associated weightings, if necessary.

Some performance exams have either been cancelled or modified if they breach social distancing rules. In our school the only course this affects is our HSC Dance class.

Students study VET courses either at school or through TAFE/other providers no longer have to complete their mandatory work placement. This is the same for Preliminary courses, however, it is likely that Year 11 students will be able to undertake their 35 hours of work placement in their HSC year which will satisfy NESA’s requirements to complete the course.

Courses with practical exams which are commonly known as major works or externally marked projects have been given a 2 week extension. These projects will now be marked by the class teacher under the guidance of NESA. Thankfully in our school, many of our Year 12 teachers and certainly our Head Teachers have done HSC marking previously which will help dramatically for this process so our students won’t be disadvantaged in 2020.

This and other information can be found on the NESA website - NESA News

For all parents, you can stay updated on what our school is doing to support your child’s learning from home through updates such as this. Alternatively, you can contact the school directly by phone (9521 2805) or email us at jannali-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au . These updates are emailed to parents, posted on our school Facebook page, posted on our school website and sent out through the Skoolbag app. The NSW Department of Education has created a Learning at Home Hub page on their website that parents access for additional support material.

Our school’s Student Wellbeing Team, Learning Support Team and Students Services Team have created a Student Services Hotline for parents, carers, and students. The service will provide extra assistance for students who are finding their workload challenging or are unable to contact their mainstream teacher via the Google Classroom platform. The phone service will allow you to contact a Learning and Support Team member who will assist with any concerns relating to the online learning process. To access this service simply ring the school number 9521 2805 and enter the extension number 125 when prompted.

Again, I thank all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

Term 2 will begin for students on Wednesday, 29 April.

Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 2 will see students learning from home as per the end of Term 1. The school is open for children of essential workers.

Continuation of Learning - Update 22/04/2020

I hope you and your children are well and you’re having opportunity for rest, relaxation and some form of family interaction over these past couple of weeks.

No doubt you have heard reports in the news and through social media over the last couple of days from the government and the Department of Education.

Unfortunately, some of these updates were posted on each school’s Facebook page by the Department before schools had time to come to terms with the proposed school operations for Term 2. Hopefully you understand that this is extremely complicated to put into practice with a school of nearly 1000 students where we need to apply social distancing requirements for staff and students. The following is an outline of what we will be doing in the first two weeks of term. A detailed plan of how we will be phasing students back to school from May 11 will be communicated to staff, parents and students over the next week.

Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th April have been designated as School Development Days. All staff at TJHS will be working remotely on these two days and therefore there will not be any supervision for students as is normally the case for School Development Days.

For the remainder of Week 1 and all of Week 2 it is expected that students continue with learning from home as they were doing in the final weeks of Term 1. TJHS staff will be working flexibly during this time with reduced numbers of staff on site each day. Our school is still open for those students who need to be at school (as per Term 1) and appropriate supervision will be provided. Year 12 students are able to access school facilities for the completion of their major works or to get support from their teachers. In both cases, arrangements will need to be made with their classroom teacher because of our staffing roster and the current social distancing requirements.

The beginning of Week 3 is the commencement of Phase 1 returning students to school and again this plan will be communicated to all stakeholders by the end of Week 1. We are ever mindful of our Year 12 students during this time and their impending HSC.

Term 2 traditionally marks the start of our reporting period based on all assessments for, of and as learning conducted throughout Semester 1. Given the unique situation of COVID-19 and the implications learning from home has had on our usual assessment and reporting processes, we are making revisions to the Years 7-10 Assessment Schedules. These will also be communicated to parents and students early in the term. In short, however, there won’t be any formal assessments for these Year groups during Term 2 such as exams etc. The Semester 1 Report will be based on learning and assessments already conducted in Term 1 along with the learning that has been undertaken from home. As a school, we are still waiting on advice from the Department on how to proceed in making judgements on student learning and the reporting process.

Our Years 11 and 12 students will continue to follow their existing assessment schedules and where individual tasks need adjusting they will be communicated to students in advance. Students should follow their Illness Misadventure Procedures that are outlined in the assessment booklets if they are unable to submit tasks by their due dates. Updates from NESA are available through NESA News and Year 12 students are encouraged to access their Students Online accounts regularly, as too their Department emails. Where there are individual questions or concerns then speak to your class teachers through Google Classrooms.

For all parents, you can stay updated on what our school is doing to support your children’s learning from home through updates such as this.

As usual, I thank all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

I hope you all find time to remember those who have died in war for us on ANZAC Day.

NSW students to transition back to the classroom in Term 2

NSW school students will gradually transition back to the classroom during Term 2 as the Government continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell outlined the plan for students attending NSW public schools to progressively return to face-to-face learning in week three of Term 2.

Ms Berejiklian said health advice continues to be that schools remain open, and parents, teachers and students can be confident that school is safe place.

“We are grateful to all families who kept their children home from school at the end of Term 1 and to teachers who worked tirelessly to deliver education online,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This allowed us critical time to prepare our schools to develop better online learning options and for considering additional hygiene measures to allow schools to return.

“We know that nothing is more important than a child’s education, and we must begin to return our students to their classrooms in a considered way.

“Under these changes, from week three of Term 2, every student will be attending school for one day a week.

“We will look to increase the number of days students are at school in a staged way and hope to have all children back at school full-time by Term 3.

“I’d like to thank the Catholic and Independent schools for working with the NSW Government at this time, as well as staff, including teachers, principals and cleaners, for working so hard to prepare for a resumption of school.

“I’d also like to thank parents for what has been a tough month, often juggling working from home and caring for children. We hope the partial resumption of on campus learning will provide some much needed relief to those families.”

During the first stage of on-campus learning, parents will be encouraged to keep their children home except on their allocated day of face-to-face learning. Initially, about a quarter of a school’s students are expected to be on site at any one time. The specific days students will be required to attend school each week will vary from school to school and will be clearly communicated to parents.

Classes will be split across schools, allowing schools to appropriately social distance students and teachers.

As always, schools will remain open for students who need them and no child will be turned away from school.

Ms Mitchell said careful consideration had been given to support the school community, providing clarity and certainty on the path forward.

“This plan provides a clear path that balances community concerns with a need to deliver continuity of quality education,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms and provisions are in place for at-risk teachers to work from home. Drop off, pick up, recess and lunchtimes will also be staggered to ensure social distancing.”

In addition to the staged return to school, the NSW Government has committed up to $95.7 million to help keep casual and temporary school staff engaged in active work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our casual and temporary teachers and other non-teaching staff across NSW schools are critical to our education system, and will help ensure the educational outcomes for our students during this staged return,” Ms Mitchell said.

A cross-sector working group of teachers will also be established to report back to the Minister on recent innovations and educational developments assembled during the COVID-19 period that are suitable to support future educational delivery.

“It’s important that we have an inventory of the cutting edge teaching solutions and recognise the best efforts of our amazing NSW teachers during a difficult time,” Ms Mitchell said.

Teachers will have an additional day to prepare for Term 2 on Tuesday 28 April making the first day of term for students Wednesday 29 April.

We know it’s been a challenging Term 1. Just as many communities began recovering from fires, droughts and floods, we moved to learning from home to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The school holidays are coming, which means your family is about to have a lot of free time and nowhere to go.

To support you while looking after children we’ve put together a handy guide of activities to stimulate young minds and keep your family busy and engaged.

Continuation of Learning - Update 6/04/2020

Although we still have 4 days left of the term officially, I would like to express my deep gratitude to our teachers who have been working hard over the past few weeks to maintain a focus on student learning during this challenging time. Our school administration and support staff have been doing a fantastic job in supporting students and their families directly. To our students who have been engaging with their class work and assessments from home, you are building resiliency while strengthening your independency as learners. Our parents have been doing an amazing job in supporting their children’s learning at home and their emotional wellbeing, while managing their own work requirements and other responsibilities.

It’s fair to say that we have all been affected by the fallout of COVID-19 but we know there are many in the community who have been severely affected by this situation, resulting in financial uncertainty. All our staff are thinking of our families at this time and as has been stated previously, if families wish to apply for a refund on their subject fees and general contributions paid so far then please email the school for information on how to apply and which fees can be refunded.

All staff across the school miss our students and their daily interactions. As I write this letter, it’s about the time of day when we would be seeing and hearing over 900 students in the playground interacting with one another while having a break after the morning’s lessons. Not only has teaching and learning been interrupted, so too have all of the school activities and events that we take for granted. The work that our SRC have been undertaking in renewing our student leadership structures has been put on hold. Our sustainability projects, our dance, drama and band programs are in limbo. Our sports people are no doubt struggling without their usual weekly sporting activities and team events.

I have spoken to many parents over the phone and through emails over the past weeks and there have been numerous comments on our school Facebook page. There has been overwhelming positivity and understanding from our parents about the work that has been undertaken by the school. These have been balanced by the fact that there is undoubtedly high levels of stress and anxiety in all households about work load and expectations of our students regarding their school work. Again, we feel for all of our students as education is all about the relationships we form across all aspects of the school. But in particular, we are mindful of our Year 12 students who are only months away from completing their HSC and our Year 7 students who just completed their induction to high school but at least managed to go on camp before this all hit. No doubt 2020 will be a year we won’t forget and I sincerely hope that we do remember it because we all came through the other side and our lives got back to normal.

As of Friday 3 April, NESA has advised that there will definitely be an HSC for NSW students in 2020, however, there are still details being worked with regards to existing social distancing rules. Students are advised to keep working towards completing all school-based assessment as normal while there may be some adjustments to scheduled tasks to support working from home arrangements.

Where tasks are adjusted, there will be sufficient notification sent to students. Students are also reminded that Illness and Misadventure Procedures are outlined in all of student assessment booklets. All work placements for VET courses have been cancelled as too have group performance assessments and exams in courses such as Drama and Music. There are still decisions to be made for all other courses that require students to submit a major work as part of their HSC. Updates from NESA are available through NESA News and Year 12 students are encouraged to access their Students Online accounts regularly; so too their Department emails. Where there are individual questions or concerns then speak to your class teachers through Google Classrooms.

For all parents, you can stay updated on what our school is doing to support your children’s learning from home through updates such as this.

Our school is preparing for a continuation of learning from home for Term 2 and therefore our faculties are working on creating Continuation of Learning @ TJHS programs for Weeks 1 – 5 which will be communicated to families at the start of the term. We are taking a flexible approach to the commencement of these programs which will be dependent on the progress towards completing this terms programs. We are therefore reviewing our Assessment and Reporting Schedules meaning that formal exams will not go ahead and the format of our Semester 1 Reports will look different for Years 7-10.

I ask all students, staff and parents to endeavour to have a break from school work during the upcoming Easter holidays. Take time to relax and re-energise yourselves because going back into learning from home arrangements will require us all to be physically, emotionally and socially well.

Once again, I thank all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

Happy Easter to everyone and lest we forget those of our ancestors who have fallen in war on ANZAC Day.

Continuation of Learning - Update 1/04/2020

In line with the many restrictions that are being put into place in our community regarding people being encouraged to work from home, our school will be moving to a reduced staffing roster on school site from Thursday, 2 April until the end of term. As has always been the case, our staff remain on duty and will continue to plan and deliver online learning activities through their respective Google Classrooms. Each day there will be myself, a Deputy Principal, some teaching staff and, administration and support staff at school. Students who need to be at school will be provided with adequate care and supervision.

Teachers of Year 12 students will still work to provide additional time to support their progress as well as providing opportunities to utilise school facilities and equipment in the completion of their major projects and performances.

While student, staff and parent routines should be in place by now around working and learning from home, there is still plenty to do to improve our work as we look towards planning for a continuation of this model into Term 2. We all need to be mindful of the increased workload this situation has brought into our homes and the workplace. Our school appreciates that many of our parents are working from home and are therefore balancing their own work requirements while supporting their children in continuing their online learning. A reminder that as a school we need to take a flexible approach to the completion and submission of classwork as directed by our teachers. Maintaining high levels of engagement of our students towards their learning is our paramount objective. We are working on a set of procedures and protocols for our teachers to achieve a consistent approach to these ongoing issues. We are still working towards our Semester 1 Assessment and Reporting Schedules and timelines, although they may need to be refined.

While teachers won’t be running lessons as per their timetable, we will be encouraging them to arrange a formal check-in at a time when their classes do normally run. This will allow students to ask questions and get clarity around certain tasks. It’s also an informal way for the teacher to track student engagement in learning. These check-ins will be dependent on the year level and frequency of timetabled classes in a cycle. Students, however, are encouraged to use their timetable and student diary as a way to manage their own time effectively and spread their hours of learning proportionately across their subjects.

Clear communication between home and school is more important than ever. Students and their teachers will communicate through Google Classrooms by posting learning activities as required and using the Stream function to provide answers to questions so that the whole class can see the information. We will be encouraging our teachers not to use the private chat function except for when providing individual feedback on tasks. Therefore, we ask that students don’t contact their teacher through this forum. Parents can ring the school on 9521 2805 or email the school at jannali-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au and they will be directed to the most appropriate person to assist with their inquiry. If teachers feel they need to email information to parents, I am encouraging them to do so through the school’s email address. Teachers will still call parents if they feel there is a need to do so.

Our school’s Student Wellbeing Team, Learning Support Team and Students Services Team have been working on creating a Student Services Hotline for parents, carers, and students.

Once again, I thank all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

A personal thank you to Joe Fazio from Tony’s Pizza and Pasta in Jannali for his generous donation of pizzas for our staff at lunchtime in recognition and support of the great work they are doing during these difficult times.

Continuation of Learning (update 31/03/2020)

We begin the week in continuation of our flexible work arrangements as per advice from the Department. As a reminder, each day we have faculty representatives, members of the executive team, members of the administrative team, along with the senior executive on site to supervise student learning and complete other work in support of student learning and school operations. The remainder of our staff will be doing similar work off site under the supervision of their Head Teacher/Supervisor. This means that all staff continue to be on duty during this time.

Our usual channels of communication continue as if we were all at school, that is, parents can call our Administration Office on 9521 2805 and they will direct the call to the person who can best address the issue. Similarly, parents can email the school at jannali-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au and again, the email will be directed to the most suitable person. Students can ask questions related to class work and/or assessments of their teacher through Google Classrooms.

The workload of our students and staff has changed in this learning from home environment. It is another thing that we need to come to terms with along with possible delays in receiving feedback or answers to questions. We ask that parents speak to their children about concerns with workload or deadlines. Each teacher will negotiate these with their classes and it will be dependent upon the particular subject area as some subjects occur once or twice in a two week cycle while others occur almost daily. The year group will also be another factor as Year 11 and Year 12 have significant deadlines to meet because of the stage they’re up to with their courses as an example.

The latest news from NESA is that all Year 12 students will continue working towards their HSC, no Year 12 student will be disadvantaged and this year’s HSC will still enable a pathway to university. At this point the message is for Year 12 students to continue working on the HSC work. Again, our school and staff are committed to the ongoing support of our Year 12 students to keep their learning on track, complete major projects and performances while also supporting their wellbeing during what has become an even more stressful time than usual for these students. We have a similar commitment to all other students. We are continuing to follow our Year 7-12 Assessment and Reporting Schedules to ensure our students are best placed for continued progress with their learning. Revised notifications will be sent home where a task has been re-designed, an extension provided for the submission date or the assessment weighting has been re-distributed. All assessment booklets which contain our school’s procedures including Accident and Misadventure along with the schedule of assessments for Semester 1 and 2 are located on our school’s website https://jannali-h.schools.nsw.gov.au under the Learning tab.

Our Student Wellbeing Team, Learning Support Team and Student Services Team continue to support our students’ academic and emotional wellbeing through the provision of a range of services, resources and strategies. Some of these will be for direct use by parents so they can support student learning and wellbeing at home. We have some students will additional needs who have been supported directly by members of these teams and we are working on ways in which these supports can be maintained effectively.

Once again, I thank all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

Continuation of Learning (update 25/3/2020)

Like us at school, I’m sure these last few days have been a whole new set of learning and realisation around your children learning from home, or at school in parallel to one another. We thank you for the many positive comments, messages and emails that we have received from our parents about the work we are doing currently to continue our students’ education. I believe The Jannali High School has been well prepared for this situation because of our systems and processes along with the leadership of our Head Teachers and Classroom Teachers supported by our School Administrative and Support Staff.

All staff at The Jannali High School are fully aware of the impact COVID-19 is having on all families in our community, in particular those who have been affected directly by illness, work closures and/or are vulnerable at this time. Rest assured, we are continuing to work hard to support the learning of your children from Year 7 through to Year 12. We are hypersensitive to stresses those Year 12 students and their families can experience during the HSC which have been exacerbated by the current situation. Many of us here at TJHS are parents of school aged children, some of who are in their HSC year as well. Not only are our faculties working daily on learning activities for our students but our Student Wellbeing Team and Learning Support Team have been working on resources and other support measures that are available for students and their families.

As fate would have it, we had technology problems for most of the day yesterday across the school. This meant that our staff have might have been unable to upload learning activities to their respective Google Classrooms and we aren’t sure what the experiences have been at home for our students. Some staff have had to resort to hotspotting on their phones to access Google Classrooms.

Students who attended school for the past few days followed their normal timetable of lessons and in most cases classes were collapsed. This enabled learning to continue with a subject teacher while other teachers worked with their Head Teacher to complete a scope and sequence of learning activities for the remainder of the term along with faculty programs and projects that will enable a continuation of learning up to the end of the term.

We have been marking rolls at the beginning of the day followed by an assembly after recess and after lunch to re-mark rolls. All students have been cooperative with these procedures and processes.

A set of year group scope and sequences will be emailed to all parents which outline the types of learning activities and associated resources across all key learning areas for the rest the term. All Google Classrooms have already been updated with learning activities for your child to work from. These scope and sequences will help with your own routines at home to know what work needs to be completed and by when. The current message is that schools will be open for the start of Term 2 but we don’t know in what capacity.

Our plan is to have similar styles of scope and sequences for the first five weeks of Term 2 ready and sent out to parents by the end of this term in the event that we return in the same type of operation as we are in now.

We are still yet to hear from NESA regarding assessment and reporting for all students in particular, how this year’s HSC will be managed. At this point the message is for Year 12 students to continue working on the HSC work. Again, our school and staff are committed to the ongoing support of our Year 12 students to keep their learning on track, complete major projects and performances while also supporting their wellbeing during what has become an even more stressful time than usual for these students. We have a similar to commitment to all other students. We are not sure how this situation will impact our Semester 1 assessment and reporting period at this stage. What we are saying is that our 7-12 Assessment and Reporting Schedules are being worked towards. In these instances, revised notifications will be sent home which might include an extended date for submission. All assessment booklets which contain our school’s procedures including Accident and Misadventure along with the schedule of assessments for Semester 1 and 2 are located on our school’s website https://jannali-h.schools.nsw.edu.au under the Learning tab.

Our Student Wellbeing Team, Learning Support Team and Student Services Team are working on a range of resources and strategies to support students’ ongoing learning and wellbeing. Some of these will be for direct use by parents so they can support student learning and wellbeing at home. We have some students will additional needs who have been supported directly by members of these teams and we are working on ways in which these supports can be maintained effectively.

Marking of student attendance for learning at home activities has been a point of discussion among our executive. The department advice has been that it is not expected that every student will sitting at a desk, when learning from home, for six hours a day and they might not be following their school timetable. Using our Continuation of Learning scope and sequences, Google Classrooms and other information parents and students will know what work is required and by when, therefore the submission of class work and assessments by the due date will be the responsibility of each student in all years.

In consultation with our School Director Educational Leadership, our school’s executive team have decided to move to a flexible work arrangement from Friday 27 March to Friday 3 April, inclusive. Faculty representatives, members of the executive team, members of the administrative team along with the senior executive will be on site to supervise student learning and complete other work in support of student learning and school operations. Other staff will be doing similar work off site under the supervision of their Head Teacher/Supervisor. This means that all staff continue to be on duty and are able to be contacted by students and/or parents.

This means that Period Zero, Period 6 and off-line lessons won’t take place at their timetabled times. Staff will be on duty from 8:30am – 3:30pm to supervise learning and be contactable, regardless. Teachers will continue to do other work outside of these hours such as, marking and programming which is the usual case. I’m sure both parents and students will appreciate that their teachers will respond to questions and provide feedback to student work in a timely fashion given the way we are all learning to work differently now.

We have had to cancel our School Photo Day originally scheduled for 31 March with the hope that we can reschedule for later in the year.

Communication from the school will continue through these types of updates as regularly as needed to ensure our families kept abreast of the current situation and how we are managing everything to support our students’ learning and wellbeing.

To support all of parents during this difficult time, I would like to offer a refund for any subject fee or general contributions that have been paid for this term. Unfortunately, and fees paid for excursions, incursions and school uniform will be unable to be refunded. Please contact our School Administration Manager to make this request.

Again, thank you all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

Please note that these will be uploaded to Google classroom over the next two days. All parents will receive a Continuation of Learning document (separate for each Year level) outlining work for each subject for the remainder of the term.

We are hoping to get these documents to our parents today.

No child will be turned away from school

The NSW Department of Education's advice regarding schools is very clear. No child in NSW will be turned away from school.

Schools will remain open for parents who want their children to attend irrespective of their profession or working arrangements.

The decision to keep schools open has been made based on advice from NSW Health, which has not changed.

The department will provide continuity of learning for all students both on and off campus and the Premier, for practical reasons, has encouraged parents to keep their children at home if they could.

Schools will communicate directly with parents on what learning options are available using their communication methods such as the school website, newsletters, emails and other online tools.

Continuation of learning at TJHS (Update)

At 2:00pm today the NSW Department of Education Secretary, Mark Scott, ran a livestream for all schools to provide updated and clear messages for their community. These messages include:

School will remain open until the end of this term, however, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home. Schools will provide a safe place of learning for children of parents working for essential services including teaching.

Schools will create one body of work for each year group in each key learning area that can be completed at home and at school.

Classes will be supervised to enable students in attendance to complete the unit of work. In this way schools will create flexible arrangements for organising supervision of classes.

School buses will still be operating.

Our school canteen will not be operating during these final weeks of term. If students attend school, parents will need to ensure they come with sufficient food etc.

What we are continuing to do:

Work within the current advice of the Department, NESA and NSW Health.

Follow year group timetables with adjustments made to teacher allocations, within faculties, based on student attendance.

Working with current assessment and reporting schedules for Years 7-12 including Interim Reports. We are still waiting for advice from NESA regarding Semester 1 assessment and reporting.

Maintaining the high expectations of all of students regarding their application to and completion of classwork and assessments whether working at school or from home.

Applying social distancing requirements across all areas of the school as is reasonable and practicable.

Ensuring staff and student toilets are stocked with soap, toilet paper and where possible, hand towel. Schools are also set to receive deliveries of hand soap as liquid soap and sanitiser supplies are becoming difficult to obtain.

Requesting that all students take responsibility for their personal hygiene and respect the need for others to do same by using school facilities and equipment respectfully.

Maintaining contact with our Director Educational Leadership to support our school’s effective operation.

Ceasing all school-based work experience and VET work placements in line with current advice.

What we’re planning to do:

Cease all extra-curricular programs including Dance Ensembles, Drama Ensembles, School Band and School Sport.

Develop a scope and sequence of learning activities for the remainder of term to be communicated to parents and students.

Postpone this year’s School Photos currently calendared for 31 March with the view to rescheduling later in the year.

Some assessment tasks are being re-designed to ensure students are able to complete them and submit them in a timely and relevant manner. In these cases updated assessment notifications will be provided to students.

Thursday Sport is being re-organised from week to week to cater for student attendance rates.

Ensuring students have continued access to learning and assessments through Google Classroom in every key learning area.

Supporting all students’ learning in particular, our Yr12 HSC students with their studies, assessments, major works and performances and VET/EVET requirements.

Student absences:

All students are encouraged to stay at home for the remainder of this term. For those students who do attend they are reminded to adhere to previous advice from NSW Health and the Australian Government regarding self-isolation.

Illness and Misadventure:

Submission of assessment tasks are being revised with notifications being sent out through Google Classroom. If tasks are not submitted by the revised due date students will need to follow our Illness and Misadventure Procedures in their Assessment Booklets.

Again, thank you all of our staff, students and parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these uncertain times in our school.

New COVID-19 restrictions begin as schools move towards online learning

The NSW Government has taken significant new steps to increase restrictions across the state - triggering the next level of enforcement necessary to fight COVID-19.

Following the decisions made by National Cabinet, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the shutdown to protect NSW citizens.

"I understand many in the community are worried, and these changes will affect everyday lives, and may be upsetting," Ms Berejiklian said.

"But these decisions will make us all safer, they are taken with the health of all citizens in mind, and they must be taken now.

"If you have the capacity to work from home, you should do so."

In line with health advice, from midday today, the following non-essential activities and businesses will be temporarily shut down:

pubs, registered clubs

gyms, indoor sporting venues

cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs

restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery

religious gatherings, places of worship (excluding small weddings and funerals that comply with the 4m2 rule, which can proceed).

It is important to note essential gatherings at places such as hospitals, workplaces, constructions sites and for public transport are exempt and will continue.

As confirmed last night by the Prime Minister schools will remain open, based on health advice, which has not changed.

But from tomorrow, in NSW, for practical reasons, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home.

"Because nearly 30 per cent of children are already being kept out of school, for practical reasons NSW is encouraging parents to keep their children at home," Ms Berejiklian said.

"This will ensure there is only one unit of work, whether the student is at home or at school.

"No child will be turned away from school."

TJHS update on school procedures re COVID-19

The Department of Education Secretary, Mark Scott, has communicated additional measures to be undertaken in schools to help manage the transmission of COVID-19 in the wider community. NSW Education has been planning and operating in accordance with NSW Ministry of Health advice to support the safety and wellbeing of students and staff. Based on this advice, a phased social distancing strategy has been implemented as of today, Monday 16 March 2020.

Our school is open and classes are continuing. The decision about when and if the school is to be closed will be a decision that will be made based on the best health advice through the Department of Education.

Below is an outline of the changes to operation and routine at our school for Weeks 8 and 9 to support the social distancing strategy. We will update this plan as more information and advice becomes available.

School Excursions, Assemblies and School Events

The following activities have been cancelled for this term:

World’s Greatest Shave

Harmony Day

All excursions

Whole school and year group assemblies

Food Technology and Hospitality classes will continue as per their program including the preparation, cooking and consumption of food. Our Home Economics teachers have stringent hygiene protocols in their kitchens and will maintain their vigilance in this matter.

Sports Activities

Zone/District, Sydney East, NSWPSSA and NSWCHSSA activities will be 'temporarily ceased until further notice'.

Thursday sport will continue, however it will be re-organised for Years 8, 9 and 10 as grade teams and recreational sports are ceased temporarily. Year 7 sport will continue as planned.

What we all can do to help manage the spread of COVID-19

Stay home if you are sick. The health and safety of our students and staff is paramount. If your child is unwell with respiratory illness, they should remain home until symptoms resolve and, where appropriate, seek advice from a medical practitioner (and call ahead first).

Wash hands regularly and thoroughly. Clean hands thoroughly for at least 20-seconds with soap and water.

Sneeze or cough into your elbow or a tissue, disposing of the tissue straight away and then washing your hands.

Posters will be displayed around the school to remind students and staff of these protocols. These posters are attached to this email.

Updated international travel restrictions

On the 15 March, the Government put in place new measures for people arriving in Australia.

Individuals must self-isolate for a period of 14 days on arrival to Australia, including returning Australian citizens and residents.

You are also required to self-isolate if you have been diagnosed with the COVID-19 or if you have had close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 infection.

This is a changing situation. We will provide further updates to our families as they become available from NSW Education

Schools to implement distancing measures

The NSW Department of Education is introducing proactive measures to limit the impact of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in our schools.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the Department of Education, today announced that schools would adopt social distancing measures requiring them to cancel assemblies, excursions, travel, some events and conferences.

Mr Scott said these measures are precautionary and designed to reduce exposure via non-essential gatherings.

"Schools have been a focus of the community and the government as the impacts of coronavirus have developed globally," Mr Scott said.

"From Monday onwards, I expect school assemblies and substantial gatherings to be cancelled, along with all excursions.

"The community expects schools to be as safe as possible. We are implementing these measures to provide peace of mind for students, parents and staff."

"These cancellations also extend to inter-school arts, sports, initiative activities and events.

All major arts, sports and initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice. This includes whole-school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.

"Local inter-school sport and other activities can proceed, but we ask organisers to ensure that as far as possible, reasonable precautions are taken," Mr Scott said.

"I trust our principals and staff to show leadership during this time."

Schools will be provided with more detailed advice and suggestions on how they can adjust their day to day activities with minimal disruption.

The department is continuing to prepare for further closures if necessary with scaling up of technology, additional training of staff and preparation of offsite lessons.

Families and students in self-isolation can find useful information to continue learning from home.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritans Purse. It partners with local organisations to reach out to children, by providing gift - filled shoe boxes to bring Christmas cheer to the under- privileged children.

A total of 93 boxes filled with gifts of clothing, toys, stationery and assorted gifts will make lots of children in a developing country, very happy.

Mrs Denise Grantham and the Senior SRC would like to thank parents, guardians, students, and staff who eagerly embraced this initiative. The response was overwhelming.

Shipping costs were covered by generous donations from parents, three Year 11 Business Studies students' - Hayden Clay, Zac Duemmer and Ryan Hardie - profit from a business venture and fundraising events of the Senior SRC.

Your gifts are helping to put the biggest smile on a poor child’s face at Christmas. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all at The Jannali High School and our community.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Many parents who live out of area have requested enrolment for their child at the school. We will endeavour to cater for all of these requests. However, like any school, there is a maximum number we can accommodate, and this is dependent on our local area enrolment number.

Applications are due to the school by the end of Term 1, Friday, 12 April 2019. Follow this link for informaton and an application form.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Movember

According to Lifeline, three times as many Australian men die by suicide than women. In 2017, there were (on average) 41 male deaths by suicide each week. That's six in a day, or one every four hours.

BeyondBlue's former chairman Jeff Kennett states, "Sons, fathers and mates, who thought the world would be a better place without them, died because they didn't know how to ask for support when they needed it most. "

Australian men are not good at dealing with poor mental health because of the stereotype of the 'typical male identity: tough, stoic, stubborn & strong'. To admit we have a problem is to emasculate us.

With this in mind, as a team, TJHS would like to raise awareness for and start a conversation around men's mental health: suicide prevention and prostate and testicular cancer with the hope that the small visibility we have here at school will encourage our students to challenge these stereotypes and to take the conversation home to their parents, relatives and friends. All of our students are encouraged to C.A.R.E and we believe that these small conversations can make a huge difference in the lives of others.

https://au.movember.com/team/2325607?mc=14

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching and the school environment have documented results of improving engagement, which leads to academic accomplishment.

The selection of The Jannali High School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. Our staff and students are working in collaboration with each other to lead and manage this program. Our Staff Tech Mentors, and accredited Apple teachers, are delivering hands on professional learning that is transforming classrooms across the school. A selection of inspiring student experts, or our Tekstars, from Year 8 and Year 9, work closely with the school leadership team. These students are accredited ‘Apple Teachers’ and have created and presented professional learning experiences for our staff and more recently are providing tutorials videos for our students, staff and our families.

The Jannali High School is an academically focused, caring and growing school that is continuing to refine what we do and how we operate and we are honoured to be recognised as an Apple Distinguished School.
